Buddhism Essay -- Buddhism India Buddha Religion Essays

Buddhism Buddhism is the great oriental religion founded by Guatama Buddha, who lived and taught in India in the sixth century BC All Buddhists trace their faith to Buddha and "revere" his person (Frederic 15). Nearly all types of Buddhism include monastic orders whose members serve as teachers and clergy to the lay community (Maraldo 19). However, beyond these common features the numerous sects of modern Buddhism exhibit great variety in their beliefs and practices. In its oldest surviving form, known as Theravada or Hinayana. Buddhism is primarily a spiritual philosophy and system of ethics (Frederic 16). It places little or no emphasis on deities, teaching that the goal of the faithful is to achieve nirvana, a blissful state of insight and release from the bonds of the self, the world, and an endless round of births, deaths, and rebirths in successive lives (Maraldo 20). The state of spiritual perfection is achieved through the practice of humility, generosity, mercy, abstention from violence, and above all, self-control. The latter forms of Buddhism, known as Mahayana, however, often worship a pantheon of divine Buddhas and future Buddhas (Zwalf 20). Some have a elaborate hierarchies demons as well. Several varieties of Mahayana Buddhism promise the worshiper a real paradise rather than a perfected spiritual state ( Zwalf 21). Several sects emphasize faith more strongly than works. "One sec seeks to induce in the believer a jarring, intuitive, nonrational insight into true reality" (Maraldo 24). In all lands to which Buddhism has spread it has made adaptations to local conditions. For example, in Japan extreme nationalist sects have developed. Differences may be seen in Buddhist art, architecture, inconograph, ritua... ...one percent of the population) in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Indonesia (Frederic 46). Outside Asia, a few thousand live in North America (300,000), South America (160,000), and Europe (20,000) (Frederic 48). The total number of Buddhists in the world is not surely known; estimates vary from less than 200,000,000 to 500,000,000 (Frederic 48). Buddhism is one the major religions of the world. Buddhism is become a dominant religious, cultural , and social force in most of Asia. It has combined with elements like Hinduism. Buddhism will continue to spread out across the world. Community Service and Volunteering Essay -- Contribution to My Communit

â€Å"Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.† - Sherry Anderson (Volunteering Quotes: Finest Quotes). On average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just ‘hours we need to be able to graduate’ and that is it. Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the volunteers to be able to grow (The Importance of Volunteers). Nowadays, the words â€Å"community service† and â€Å"volunteering† are being used constantly. People tend to forget or misunderstand the real meaning or significance of volunteering. By exploring the history and significance of volunteering in the United States, people can develop a culture of volunteering and enric h their lives and make a positive social contribution. Being a volunteer means that, that person is giving his or her time and skills to help their own community and those in needs, whether in a service, project or organization. People cannot confuse volunteering with a regular job since volunteers are not paid, and they just use their gratis time to help others, without expecting something in return (Student Essay on The Importance of Community Service). We persistently see community service and volunteering as a waste of time and unproductive act, but we need to take into account the seriousness these two topics ... ...ans, Book Summaries and More. Socialism for the Common Man Essay -- Economic System

â€Å"I wished to frighten the country by a picture of what its industrial masters were doing to their victims; entirely by chance I stumbled on another discovery—what they were doing to the meat-supply of the civilized world. In other words, I aimed at the public’s heart, and by accident hit it in the stomach† (Yoder 9). With the publication of a single book, Upton Sinclair found himself an overnight phenomenon receiving international response. In late 1904, Sinclair left for Chicago to tell the story of the poor common workingmen and women unfairly enslaved by the vast monopolistic enterprises. He found that he could go anywhere in the stockyards provided that he â€Å"[wore] old clothes†¦ and [carried] a workman’s dinner pail† (Sougstad 553). While Sinclair spent seven weeks in Chicago living amongst and interviewing the Chicago workers, he came upon another discovery—the filth of improper sanitation and the processing of spoiled meat . From what he saw, Sinclair spun a tale with graphic descriptions of the packing houses, creating a book that produced unprecedented public uproar. The book entitled, The Jungle, is said to have decreased America’s meat consumption for decades and President Roosevelt, himself, reportedly threw his breakfast sausages out his window after reading the novel. The New York Evening Post responded, â€Å"Mary had a little lamb and when she saw it sicken; she shipped it off to Packingtown and now it’s labeled chicken† (Krugman). However, Sinclair classified his novel as a failure and blamed himself for the public’s misunderstanding. He found it disheartening that the public was less concerned about the plight of the slaughterhouse workers than the possibility of eating tainted meat. In Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, he ill... ...the bottom as the worst of scum. Sinclair promotes socialism, as publicly owned corporations will be less about individual profit but the well-being of the common good. Sinclair promotes socialism in The Jungle in many methods: a capitalist society provides workers with sickening working condition, a capitalist society consists of corruption, and a socialistic society will mean a perfect world. Sinclair’s extremely graphic details lead to global acknowledgement. President Roosevelt dubbed Upton Sinclair as â€Å"a muckraker†Ã¢â‚¬â€an individual who channels time and effort into exposing corruption. Even though Sinclair’s novel did not do as much for the poor as he hoped, it did bring about change to America: stricter meat-packing regulations, standards of cleanliness in processing plants, and public knowledge of what the Chicago corporations were doing to their canned meat.

American Era Best Choice :: essays research papers

During the period from 1865 to 1929, I think that the most important person, event and technology were Abraham Lincoln, The Civil War, and the airplane.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Abraham Lincoln, the person I felt most important, was an incredible man. Not only for his charisma, and character, but for his actions and what he believed in.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  He was a man from the North, who was for the abolishment of slavery. He was a Republican. Although good to the North, the Southerners declares him as the greatest evil of the century. President Lincoln won the election with 180 electoral votes and 1,865,583 of the popular votes. Winning the South by a hundred electoral votes and thousands of popular votes in 1860.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When Confederates broke off with the United States, the civil war became a fight to keep as a union. Lincoln declared himself as commander in chief, forced his troops to emancipate slaves, as well as protect them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Lincoln grew up poor, taught himself all that he knew, his belief of all men being created equal is what set's him apart from so many other people. During this time he was revolutionary in changing the lives of slaves and the mind of a white man.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  He signed the 13th Amendment, freeing all slaves. He also gave one of the most inspirational speeches of his time at Gettysburg. And along with his words, the country held together.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I feel that President Abraham Lincoln kept this country together, without his leadership, our country would not be one solid nation, rather broken into separate ruled states. Although being assassinated on April 15, 1865, to me he is still the most important man in American history.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The events that I thought were very important ties up with President Lincoln, the Civil War.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Civil War is what eventually kept the states together. It is said to be the war with the most loss of life on American soil.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This war started on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter and ended on June 8, 1863 at Fort Hudson on the border of Mississippi and Louisiana. Although it is said, the last battle was at Gettysburg.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The reason I feel the Civil War was so important to United States history and all the eras are because it was one thing that kept us all under one democratized government. Without the war, we would be just another jumbled, out of government and troubled country.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The most important technological development I think would have to be the airplane.

Seatbelts :: essays research papers

When travelling at slow speeds in your car the wearing of a seatbelt has little effect of your body when you brake. So why is it important to wear your seat belt? A driver or passenger travelling in a car is moving at the same speed as the car. If the car suddenly stops, the body of the rider inside will keep moving forward at the same speed. This demonstrates inertia. The tendency of a moving object to keep moving, or of a stationary object to remain at rest. Basically Newtons first law; that a body stationary or moving with constant velocity will want to continue to do so, unless acted on by a force. Lets understand what is happening here. First drive along in your car at 60 km/h on a backstreet with no traffic, then brake gently and slowly. You will notice that the seat belt doesn’t really do much to hold your body. Now do the same again but this time break as quickly and sharply as you can. Your body will be thrown forwards with great force, and your seatbelt will be literally holding you in place. Now your body was what is commonly referred to as being "thrown forwards", however this is not the case. Your body was actually not slowing down much at all and your velocity relative to the car initially was much greater. The car began to slow down due to breaking and your body in accordance with Newtons First law wanted to continue to move at the original constant velocity. Now if your seat belt was not there to provide an opposing force, to your momentum and inertia, by holding you from going forwards, you very likely would have been thrown into the dash or steering wheel. Lets look at this mathematically. m= your mass in kilograms for this purposes 70kg V= final velocity 0 m/s U= initial velocity 60 km/h or 16.6 m/s straight line S= distance taken to stop 42 m t= 3.8 a= -4.368 m/s/s Now your momentum at 60km/h is P=MU So P= 70kg*16.6m/s P=1162 Kg m/s Impulse I=MU/t I=70*16.6/3.8 I=305N So your body will weigh about 610kg when you are breaking hard, a force it is difficult for any person to withstand. Now in the context of a head on accident at around 60km/hr the force exerted on your body is greatly increased. In the event of such an accident it will take the car approximately 0.4 seconds to stop.

Jesus as a role model

Today I will be presenting my speech to discuss why Jesus is the role model for Christian life. The Christian tradition has viewed Jesus as the perfect role model because he was sinless. Jesus lived his life providing principles, teachings and messages that are to be emulated by his followers. These teachings are evident In all aspects of Christianity and have become the foundation for Christians as to how we are to live our lives.Many texts throughout the New Testament further exemplify the understanding of Jesus as the reflect role model, including John 13:15, â€Å"For I have given you an example, that you also should do Just as I have done to you. † The key components of Christian life include love, forgiveness, prayer and compassion. These components have all been developed from the way Jesus carried out his life Through Jesus' life, he spread teachings of unconditional love and forgiveness.Jesus taught that forgiveness Is central to the relationship between God and human s. Unconditional love and forgiveness are closely related to each other, because without originates, It Is Impossible to love unconditionally. As Jesus suffered on the cross, he asked for the forgiveness of his executioners, which can be found In Luke 23:34, â€Å"Father forgive them; for the know not what they do. † This Is the greatest example of unconditional love and forgiveness, and as Christians, we aspire to be as loving and forgiving as Jesus.Another example of Jesus' teachings of forgiveness can be found in Mark 1 1 :25, â€Å"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins†. Through this quote we are taught to not just act as though we have forgiven someone, but to truly forgive them. What can also be understood from this is that only those who practice this teaching of Jesus can fully receive God's forgiveness.The life of Christians includes the practice of forgiveness in o rder to be able to love others unconditionally, as well as be forgiven by God. Jesus Is also our role model as to how we pray. Jesus' life of prayer consisted of praying before meals, giving thanks, praying for others, shared prayer and praying fore making important decisions, but his most valued form of prayer was private prayer. An example of Jesus' teachings of private prayer can be found in Matthew 6: 5-15.During this, Jesus says â€Å"But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. † It is also within this reference where Jesus teaches us the Lord's prayer. Although he was half divine, Jesus was also half human whilst on earth. Therefore, he was subjected to the same temptations, frustrations and sorrows that Christians are also affected by in our lives everyday. Through all these struggles that Jesus encountered, he prayed to God in private for help and strength to c omplete the task he had been given.We as Christians pray following this example of Jesus life of prayer and teachings of private prayer when we are faced with our own hardships and are in need of guidance. Jesus has taught us how we are to pray through his own to why Jesus is a role model to Christians. In the process of his teachings, Jesus has showed that human beings can be holy wrought their compassion towards the poor, marginal's and dispossessed. Jesus' had immense compassion towards these people of need and reacted through acts of mercy.We as Christians have learnt to be generous, giving and to be empathetic throughout our lives by the examples of Jesus' compassion. Also as followers of Christ, we are encouraged through Jesus' teachings to know our obligations to assist those in need in order to be Christians. This teaching can be found in Luke 18: 22-23, where Jesus told a young, rich ruler that he was to â€Å"Sell all that you own and stubbier the money to the poor, and y ou will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. But the young man did not have the qualities to be a disciple of Jesus, because he showed that his love for his riches was greater than his love for God and was reluctant to give up his possessions. Jesus' examples of compassion for the poor, marginal's and dispossessed have shaped how Christians practice acts of mercy towards people of need. These acts of empathy are one of the many reasons why Christians view Jesus as the perfect role model.Jesus is the ultimate role model for Christian life because he loved unconditionally, he forgave, he lived a life of prayer, he was compassionate towards the poor, marginal's and dispossessed as well as many other things. As well as living his life practicing these qualities, Jesus has also taught these principles to his followers as a guide to live their life by. These teachings, messages and principles are imitated through the lives of Christians as a way of following the commands of God, and have become the foundation as to how we are to live our lives as his followers.

A World Class Education Ch 3

The bigger the change, it seems, the more difficult the task. Education is one of the most important things in a child’s life, so what happens when someone decides to present new challenges to our way of thinking? Vivian Stewart attempts to bring some very good points to light in chapter three of her book A World Class Education. Most successful systems tend to have the same basic elements when it comes to education.Strong leadership with ambitious vision is necessary for a profitable future in American instruction. High quality teachers and administrators who focus on global and future orientated goals help guide their students toward a more equitable state. Teacher accountability is also extremely significant; the nation board standard number four states that teachers should strive to strengthen their skills as an educator and critically examine their practice in order to improve their performance.Lastly, teachers should always keep an open mind for the future and continuous ly learn new ways to develop curriculum. This relates to national standard number five. In physical science, students are required to manipulate mathematical equations in order to solve for a range of variables. Here in the United States, we use the English system as our standard for measurement: However, nearly everywhere else in the world, the metric system is used.I apply global orientation to my classroom by teaching my students the metric system and explaining why it is important for scientists to have the same system of measurement. We should be mindful of learning the way others do things and less consumed with the our own systems when we can all benefit from a unified structure. Stewart, V. (2012).
